This Makalu Base
Camp trek takes up deep into the eastern
Himalayas, providing some of Nepal's most unseen and
amazing scenery.
From Tumlingtar by walking north, up the Arun river,
Sedwa and Num, crossing Shipton La (4127m) into
upper Barun Khola valley for a close look at
Makalu(8475 m) and chamlang (7290 m). The trek to
Makalu base camp visits one of the most remote and
unfrequented areas of Nepal. The Barun Valley is
part of huge international protected area under an
agreement between China and Nepal. The Makalu Barun
National Park was established in 1992 as Nepals
eight National Parks.
The park of 2330sq.km. is bordered by the Arun River
in the east and the Sagarmatha National Park in the
west. Barun Valley is a sanctuary for wild animals
such as wolves, lynx, fox and the elusive snow
leopard. Our descent into the pine and rhododendron
forest from the Barun Valley takes us past the lower
Barun Glacier and into the Makalu basin and to
Tumlingtar to catch the flight back to Kathmandu. |

commence trek to Khandbari
Arrive Tumlingtar, where we start
our trek. The ascent starts from the
Arun Kosi and the Sabha Khola
rivers. It is a long ridge walk with
numerous teahouses along the road.
We can see views of the huge
Chhamlang massif in the distance.
The trail crosses a plateau then
climbs gradually after which we will
arrive in Khandbari. We camp above
the village on large grassy fields

Trek Khandbari - Bhote Bash

Trek Bhote Bash Mure
Beyond Bhotebash, the cultivated
field will soon disappear and the
fine scenery of Chamlang, Makalu and
Jaljale Himal will appear. We start
descending to the village of Mure at
1980m through rhododendron forest
and the people here are Sherpas and
Rais. |

Trek Tashi Gaon Kauma
Tashigoan to Kauma Climb a gentle
slope, and arrive at the Uteshe.
Climb up a gentle slope, cross a
stream, and then emerge to Kharka.
The path gradually becomes steeper;
you pass Dhara Kharka atop the ridge
and then come to Unshisa at the
ridge crossing. From Unshisa you are
on the Iswa Khola side of the ridge;
you pass by some step hills and
streams and continue along the ridge
route until you arrive at Kauma. |
Day 11: |
Trek Kauma - Mumbuk via Barun La
Kauma to Mumbuk. When you climb the
ridge from Kauma you emerge a top
the best scenic lookout of this
course. Lined up at the far reaches
of Iswa Khola are Chamlang (7319m),
Peak 6 (6739m), Peak 7 (6105m), and
long-awaited Makalu (8463m), while
to the east is silhouetted the
outline of the Kangchenjunga Range.
Continue ascend through Shipton Pass
which actually consists of two
passes, Keke La and Tutu La. Descend
to a small pond where once again you
begin to climb the mountainside to
Keke La (4127m) and Tulu La. As you
descend through the forested area,
you arrive at the campsite of Mumbuk
(3500m). |
Day 12: |
Trek Mumbuk - Nehe Kharka
Mumbuk to Nehe Kharka. From Mumbuk
you follow a steep, After passing a
bivouac cave, you descend to the
Barun Khola. The path follows the
right bank of the riverbed from
which peak 6 is visible; When you
emerge to a terraced hill, you are
at the Tematan Kharka. Climb gentle
slope to a wide valley, head right
to Nehe Kharka (2670m) |

Trek Nehe Kharka Shershon
Nehe Kharka to Shershon Continue
ascend and soon Ama Bijma (Pregnant
Woman) becomes visible and reach to
the Ripock Kharka. From this point
to Kamara via Jark Kharda you travel
a path up a gently sloping
mountainside leading away from the
Barun Khola; you will enjoy the
excellent views here. Pyramid Peak
(6830m), Peak 4 (6720m), Chamlang,
Peak 6, Peak 3 (6477m), Peak 5
(6404m) each appears one after the
other. Here, one may truly savor the
charm of Himalayan trekking at its
finest. When you pass Ramara with
its single bivouac cave, the Barun
Khola approaches and the snout of
Lower Barun Glacier appears ahead.
You arrive at Shershon (4615m) with
its four roofless bivouac caves. |
