Everest
Base Camp Trek (Camp/Lodge) / NPL – 14 |
The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most
popular trekking packages in the Himalayas and is
visited by thousands of trekkers each year. This two
weeks treks to Everest base camp takes you to the
land of Sherpas with following the footsteps of
Tenzing Hillary, Tilman and other pioneers of the
Himalayas. The Everest Trekking has been calling out
to trekkers and climbers since its first expeditions
to the Nepalese side of Everest in the 1953 after
that the trails that climb through the foothills of
the world’s highest mountain still offer some of the
most challenging trekking in Nepal.
The trekking to Everest base camp has been
extensively developed for trekking with well
maintained trails and plenty of guest houses.
Solukhumbu is homeland for the Sherpa people who
gain the good reputation for their skills for
trekking and climbing to the mountains. The Buddhist
monuments of the Sherpas-Stupas Chortens and the
Gompas (monasteries) mirror the towering landscape
all around and the Sagarmath Nationalal parks is
rich with flora and fauna, rare species, such as the
snow leopard and the lesser panda.
A
hair-raising flight lands you at the airstrip of
Lukla from where you begin this classic trek to
Everest. The trek leads through the famous Sherpa
Village of Namche Bazaar along the Khumbu Valley
ultimately taking you to the Everest Base Camp, at
the foot of famous Khumbu Icefall. Though the trek
is relatively short nevertheless the stunning views
of Amadablam, Kantega and Pumori including Everest
will be within your sight hovering in the sky.

One of the holiest Hindu shrines
situated on the banks of Holy
Bagmati River. The richly ornamented
pagoda houses the sacred linga, (or
phallic symbol) of Lord Shiva. This
is also a cremation site for Hindus,
where the dead bodies are burned
with ritual ceremony on the banks of
the holy river. Just a few minutes
drive from Pashupatinath is
Boudhanath which is one of the
biggest stupas in the entire world.
With its four pair of eyes in four
cardinal directions, it keeps watch
for righteous behavior and human
property.
In the afternoon drive to
Swayambhunath. Regarded as more than
2000 years old this stupa is
situated at 77m above the level of
the valley and thus has magnificent
birdseye view of Kathmandu Valley.
From Swayambhunath we drive to
Kathmandu Durbar Square. With more
than 50 temples and shrines within a
few blocks of one another, the
square contains one of the most
concentrated groupings of historical
structures in the valley. This
complex of palaces, courtyards and
temples, built between the 12th and
18th centuries, used to be the seat
of ancient Malla kings of Kathmandu. |
Day 03: |
Fly to Lukla and then, trek till
Phakding.
Fly to Lukla early in the morning
from Tribhuvan Domestic Airport,
Kathmandu It is 40 minutes flight in
twin otter. Lukla is located at the
altitude of 2800m so there will be
quite colder than in Kathmandu.
After walking few minutes from Lukla
airport, stop at restaurant for tea
break. books, internet facility. If
you need some trekking gear then you
can buy here in Lukla.
After
the break the journey starts from
Lukla. Today we have to walk for 3-
4 hours to reach Phakding through
Chaurikharka, Chiplong, Thadokovi
and Ghat. We can see spectacular
Himalayan view from Chiplong and
Thadokovi. The religion of the
people of this region is Buddhism so
we can see many monasteries, Maane
and script are written on the rock
in Tibetan language. Today journey
is not so difficult. Phakding
(2650m) is at low altitude than
Lukla so we feel quite warm there
rather than in Lukla. Phakding is a
commercial place so we can see lots
hotel and Bhattis over here. |
Day 04: |
Trek Pakding - Namche Bazar
Today the journey starts after
breakfast. To reach Namche we have
to walk through Tok-Tok, Manju,
Jorsale. The journey from Phakding
to Jorsale is quite easy. There is
Everest National Park at Monjo so,
we have to check in there as a first
check point. Then after an hour walk
along the bank of Dudkoshi River we
reach at Jorsale where we will have
lunch. There are no shops available
between Jorsale to Namche. From
Jorsale after some minutes we have
to cross Dudhkoshi River and bridge.
After bridge there is steep up route
we have to follow. If the weather is
clear we can see Mount Everest from
Thami Danda. We can see many
beautiful mountains, water falls,
Mane on the way. Namche is situated
at 3440m altitude so we feel cold
out there. We can see different
mountains from Namche. Namche is the
biggest commercial area of Everest
Region where we can find everything
needed to Trekkers like internet
facility, ATM. But sometimes due to
technical reason ATM does not work.
From every Friday and Saturday a
special type of fair held here.
Bakery café and Pub are also
available in Namche. |
Day 05:
|
Rest day in Namche Bazaar
Today is the day for
acclimatization, so you hike as per
your choice. If you want long hiking
you can go to Thamo and Thame where
you can se Edmund Hillary Nursery
and you can also see Monastery and
various mountains in Thame. Today at
least you have to walk 8-9 hours up
and down. We have lunch en route
while hiking. For acclimatization we
can take a short hike of 5-6 hours
for which we have to walk steep up
from Namche to Syangboche then to
Everest View Hotel to Khumjung. At
Khumjung we can also see Monastery
and the school made by Sir Edmund
Hilary. During this trekking we will
get chance to see many beautiful
mountains. You can also visit Sherpa
Museum located at Namche. After a
day hiking return to Namche, have
dinner and overnight. |
Day 06: |
Trek Namche Bazaar – Dole
After Breakfast we will start a easy
journey to Sansa. After Sansa, you
have to take left turn, then to
follow steep up and reach Mong-La.
Walking steep down from Mong-La you
will reach to Phorte, where you can
find a good lodge, food and drinks.
Then you have to take steep up and
straight route to reach Dole. In
today’s journey, you will find one
waterfall in between. At Dole, there
are about 5 hotels from where you
can view beautiful mountains. Dole
is located at the height of 4050m. |
Day 07:
|
Trek Dole – Macharemo
Today the journey starts after
breakfast as usual. Trek today is
not that difficult as most of the
time the trail is either straight or
steep down. At Machhermo, there are
around 5 lodges and one hospital
where advice for High Altitude is
given. This is at 4420m altitude.
You can also see various mountains
from here. |
Day 08: |
Trek Macharemo – Gokyo
After the breakfast, trekking
starts. The trail from Machhermo to
Gokyo is quiet difficult as we need
to in the high altitude. Gokyo is
famous for lake. You can see
different mountains from Gokyo. It
is located at 4750m. The longest
glacier of Nepal Nagjumba Glacier is
located near the Gokyo Lake which is
in danger zone for explosion. |
Day 09: |
Trek Gokyo ~ Ri – Gokyo
Today early in the morning we go to
Gokyo RI, which is famous as
viewpoint. From here you can see
beautiful mountains at 360 degree.
Nagjumba Glacier and Mount Makalu
can be clearly seen from here. You
can also see the lodges near Gokyo
Lake.To reach Gokyo RI you have to
follow step up route for 2 hours.
Gokyo Ri is located at 5410m. After
sightseeing and taking photos at
Gokyo Ri, its better to have
breakfast at Lodge. If you want to
see more Lake you can go to fifth
lake for which you have to go
through the bank of Nagjumba
Glacier. If you want to trek this
route you must bring packed lunch.
In the evening return to Gokyo for
dinner and overnight. |
Day 10:
|
Trek Gokyo – Thangna
Today’s journey is short and sweet.
Thagna is a place where you can find
about 4 lodges. The trail for Thagna
is changing day by day because of
Nagjumba Glacier which is expanding
everyday. To reach Thagna you have
to take left turn from No. 2 Gokyo
by crossing Nagjumba Glacier. |
Day 11: |
Trek Thangna – Chola~Pass – Dzongla
This is a big day, as we tackle the
second of the High Passes. We need
to set off very early in the morning
to ensure that we cross the Cho~La
and descend to Dzongla in good time.
At first, we make a very gradual
ascent alongside the river up a
small valley to eventually reach a
sandy ridgeline. This gives a great
view of the Cho La ahead and of some
daunting 6,000m peaks to the north
and south: Nirekha Peak, Kangshung
Peak and Cholatse, among them. We
make a long, gradual descent on a
pleasant grassy path to reach a
lunch stop below the pass. After
lunch, the ground becomes steeper
and rockier; it is time to pack away
our trekking poles. The route weaves
around boulders at first, before
climbing up onto stonier ground.
There is a final steep section to
reach the pass itself. This is on
loose ground, which can often be
icy, so we need to take great care.
The top of the pass is glaciated and
we walk across a flat section of
snow for about 30 minutes before
dropping off the side and back onto
rock. With Dzongla below us and now
in sight, we pick our way down the
far side of the pass and descend
into a lovely valley. A stream that
meanders along the bottom leads us
to our campsite where we take a
well-deserved rest. |
Day 12: |
Trek Dzongla – Lobuche
The trail from Dzongla descends a
little, then contours steadily
around Awi Peak, before joining the
main Khumbu Valley and reaching
Lobuje. There are yet more superb
views today, including towards the
distinctive north face of Ama Dablam.
It will probably feel like something
of a 'culture shock' arriving in
Lobuje, as this is a busy place
where all base camp trekkers stay en
route to Everest. |
Day 13: |
Trek Lobuche - Gorakshep
Today’s trek is three hours to reach
Gorakshep which is our last stop
before climbing to Everest Base Camp
(EBC). The trail up to Gorakshep is
rocky and windy but it offers good
views of Pumori and there are
beautiful views of Everest Base Camp
and glacier. After lunch, when the
sun begins to set over Everest, we
will hike to the top, Kala Patthar
(5545m), which is one of the finest
view points in the Khumbu. As the
light begins to fade we stroll back
to our lodge at Gorakshep. |
Day 14: |
Trek Gorakshep – Kalapathar –
Gorakshep
From Gorak Shep, we move on to
Kalapathar (5545m), meaning ‘the
black rock‘. The climb of Kala
Pathar is one of the most rewarding
parts of the trip. It is a steep
ascent up the grassy slopes west of
Gorakshep to a shelf at the foot of
Pumori (7145m). Kalapathar provides
the best vantage point for viewing
Mt. Everest (8848m). As we near the
top of Kalapathar, more of the peak
of Everest comes into view and a
short walk north from the summit of
Kalapathar on the ridge towards
Pumori will allow an unobstructed
view all the way to the South Col. |
Day 15: |
Trek Gorakshep – Everest Base Camp –
Lubuche
The route to Everest base camp
follows the Khumbu Glacier,
sometimes on the moraine and
sometimes on the glacier itself. The
walk is especially intriguing for
the views it has of the 15m high
seracs of ice, a feature peculiar to
Himalayan glaciers. The trip to base
camp, while fascinating, is not as
spectacular as the ascent of
Kalapathar because there is no view
of Everest itself from the base
camp. From Everest Base Camp descent
to Lobuche which is easy but seems
endless because of the many uphill
climbs from Gorakshep. |
Day 16: |
Trek Lobuche – Dingboche
To go to Dingboche, we retrace our
steps back to Duglha, and then go
straight uphill from the bridge to
reach an upper trail, staying high
above the valley floor, past the yak
pastures at Dusa to a chorten at the
head of the Imja Khola Valley. The
views are great – you can easily
recognize Island Peak (6189m)
because its name is an apt
description. Makalu (8475m) is the
greenish-grey peak visible in the
distance over the pass to the right
of Island Peak. Descend from the
chorten to Dingboche at 4410m
follows the trail as it traverses
east into the valley. Dingboche is
the highest place of Nepal where
plant vegetation and crops like
potato can be grown |
Day 17: |
Trek Dingboche – Thyangboche
Today the trekking starts after
breakfast as usual. Today’s journey
is straight up so can be done
easily. Walking down the bank of
Dudhkoshi you will reach Thyangboche.
Thyangboche is famous for Sunrise
view as well as for Thyangboche
Monastery. |
Day 18: |
Trek Thyangboche – Jorsale
From Thyangboche we descend steeply
to the suspension bridge at
Phunkitenga and after a break and a
cup of tea we cross the Dudh Kosi
and ascend to Tashinga. From here
the trail contours high above the
valley through Shanasa before
returning to Namche Bazaar, where we
take our lunch and enjoy a final
opportunity to visit the shops in
the bazaar. We descend down from
Namche Bazaar steeply along the
Bhote Kosi River and follow it to
Jorsale where we will be having a
night stop in the bank of the Dudh
Koshi River. |
Day 19: |
Trek Jorsale – Lukla
We start our last day walk along the
River following the bridges to Monjo
then It’s about three hours walking
to Lukla. We walk along the River
Dudh Koshi again and take a final
uphill from Chheplung to Lukla. It’s
our last night where you never like
to miss final chatting with our
Guide and Porters. |
Day 20: |
Reserve day |
Day 21: |
Fly back to Kathmandu & transfer to
the hotel. Visit Patan Durbar Square
Upon arrival in Kathmandu transfer
to the hotel and in the afternoon
sightseeing tour of Patan city. This
sister capital is an ancient city
also known as Lalitpur and is
situated on the southern bank of the
river Bagmati River and is 5 km
southeast of Kathmandu. This city is
full of Hindu temples and Buddhist
monuments with bronze gateways,
guardian deities and wonderful
carvings. It is also known as the
city of fine arts and for the superb
craftsmanship of its artisans. |
Day 22: |
Visit Bhaktapur and then transfer to
the airport for onward journey
In the morning after breakfast drive
to Bhaktapur. The urban city of
Bhaktapur from the medieval period
also known as Bhadgaon has an area
of 4 sq. miles in a conch-shell
shape. Bhaktapur also means the city
of devotees. We also visit the
Nyatapola Temple, which at 98ft.
Height, is not only the highest
temple in the valley but also one of
the best examples of traditional
Nepali Temple architecture. |
