Everest Base Camp with Lobuche East
Expedition via Gokyo~Ri / NPL 19 |
Situated at the heart of crowd
Khumbu region- Lobuche East is one
of the well renowned trekking peaks
in Nepal to be climbed. It was first
climbed by Laurence Nielson and
Sherpa Ang Gyalzen in April 25,
1984. Lobuche is undoubtedly a
hardest of trekking peaks that
offers an innovative & challenging
climbing route to all the amateur
and professional climbers.
Climbing Lobuche East is admirable;
it encompasses more technical
climbing comparing to Mera Peak and
Island Peak. Our professionally
designed itinerary follows an old
Tibetan trade route across two high
passes, the Renjo La (5500m) and the
Cho La (5420m). Its an outstanding
alpine trail and a perfect
acclimatization trip before heading
to Lobuche. The reward however, is
stunning, a 360 degrees view on the
spectacular Himalayas. |

Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer

Day 02: |
Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square,
Pashupatinath, Boudhanath &
Swayambhunath
In the morning after breakfast start
sightseeing tour of Pashupatinath -
One of the holiest Hindu shrines
situated on the banks of Holy
Bagmati River. The richly ornamented
pagoda houses the sacred linga, (or
phallic symbol) of Lord Shiva. This
is also a cremation site for Hindus,
where the dead bodies are burned
with ritual ceremony on the banks of
the holy river. Just a few minutes
drive from Pashupatinath is
Boudhanath which is one of the
biggest stupas in the entire world.
With its four pair of eyes in four
cardinal directions, it keeps watch
for righteous behavior and human
property.
In
the afternoon drive to Swayambhunath.
Regarded as more than 2000 years old
this stupa is situated at 77m above
the level of the valley and thus has
magnificent birdseye view of
Kathmandu Valley. From Swayambhunath
we drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square.
With more than 50 temples and
shrines within a few blocks of one
another, the square contains one of
the most concentrated groupings of
historical structures in the valley.
This complex of palaces, courtyards
and temples, built between the 12th
and 18th centuries, used to be the
seat of ancient Malla kings of
Kathmandu. |
Day 03: |
Fly Kathmandu - Lukla and then trek
till Phakding.
Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla
(2886m.) which takes about 40
minutes and trek from Lukla to
Phakding (2640 m.) and it takes
approximately three hours. Fly to
Lukla. You descend a mountainside
path that merges into your route to
Everest, with views to a valley to
your right; and at its far end,
Kusum Kang (6367m.) The Dudh Koshi
river approaches as you pass a Mani
wall and arrive at Ghat teahouse.
You continue along a small path with
many climbs and descents following
the left bank of Dudh Koshi to
Phakding. |
Day 04: |
Trek Phakding - Namche Bazar
Trek from Phakding to Namche
Bazaar (3440 m.) and it takes
approximately five hours. The trail
starts through a level path along
the right bank. Thamserku looms
skyward on the opposite bank. You
cross a stream and climb the
terraced hill from the Dudh Koshi
route, to arrive at Bengar. The
trail now climbs from the riverbed
on the left bank into the mountain,
through a forest to Chumoa. You
continue along a path with many ups
and downs; cross a stream, and pass
by the tiny village of Monjo. Now,
you descend the path of stone steps
and return to the right bank over a
wooden bridge. After a short climb
you come to Jorsales teahouse and
hotel, also stop at the National
Park Service where a park entrance
fee is collected. After your
departure from Jorsale you enter a
forested mountainside. You follow a
short walk along the riverbed of
this V-shaped valley where the river
forks - the right is the Dudh Koshi
and the left is the Bhote Koshi that
leads to Nampa La. After short
distance along the Bhote Koshi you
begin the steep ascent to Namche
Bazaar. As the mountain path zigzags
uphill, you will emerge at a ridge
top rest area that offers excellent
views of Everest (8848m) and Lhotse
(8516m.) The climb eases somewhat,
and Namche Bazaar appears ahead as
you travel along the path surrounded
by pines. Pass the plateau where the
Saturday bazaar is held and enter
the village. Namche Bazaar (3440m)
is surrounded on three sides by
mountain ranges and opens out only
where it faces the Bhote Koshi. |
Day 05:
|
Trek Namche Bazar - Everest view
hotel, Khunde - Namche Bazar
Rest day at Namche Bazaar (3440 m.)
for acclimatization. Namche is
tucked away between two ridges
amidst the giant peaks of the Khumbu
and has an abundance of lodges, tea
shops and souvenir shops as well as
a magnificent outlook. It is an
ideal place to spend a rest day for
acclimatization to the high altitude
before heading off towards
Thyangboche. For the acclimatization
you walk up to Khumjung where you
can visit monastery You can also
enjoy the splendid views of Everest,
Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse,
Lhotse, Tawche, Kwangde and so on.
Or, you can have an hour walk up to
the Syangboche (3800m.) where
Everest View Hotel is situated above
Namche Bazaar for the outstanding
view of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama
Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. |
Day 06: |
Trek Namche Bazar - Kumjung
Phortse
We start our trek from Namche
heading north-east on a direct line
to Everest. Ahead of us we can see
one of the most beautiful mountains
in the Khumbu - Ama Dablam (6856m),
as well as Everest still far off in
the distance. At Sanasa we branch
off the Everest trail and head up
the hill to the small settlement of
Mong where we stop for lunch. From
here it is a steady descent to the
Dudh Kosi at Phortse Thanga (3500m).
This is a beautiful riverside
settlement and is our spot for the
night. |
Day 07:
|
Trek Phortse Tenga Luza
A day, gaining elevation, along a
trail high above the valley floor,
Cho Oyu looming in front of us at
the border of Nepal and Tibet for
the later part of the walk. We pass
some small Sherpa herding huts en
route, and after a few hours of
walking we arrive at the charming
yak-herding settlement of Luza and
our favorite lodge there, Lhakpa
Nuru and Chomzi's Kangtega View. |
Day 08: |
Trek Luza - Gokyo
Another beautiful trekking day; we
set off early as the walk up to 4800
meters is difficult at altitude. In
the Gokyo valley, once past the
lodge at Phanka, the character of
the trekking changes abruptly. The
opaque powder-blue lakes are often
on the verge of freezing over, and
sometimes perform a Himalayan
symphony of expanding and retracting
ice. We have entered the grassy
ablation valley running beside the
Ngozumpa Glacier, and have our first
sight of Gokyo, a seasonal village
and grazing area built beside the
third, and biggest lake. Gokyo has
become something of a Himalayan
resort without the crowd at least
in terms of the comfortable lodges
with sunrooms, unbeatable views,
excellent food and warm stoves. It
is a great base to explore from, and
we have plenty of time for it. A
more spectacular setting is
difficult to imagine, and our
guesthouse, the Cho Oyu Lodge,
perfectly situated on the lake-side,
is a little piece of heaven. Dali
Sherpa, our host, is a wonderful
woman and good friend, and if the
kids are off from school it is a
very lively place.
Lured
into the wonderful sun-room, it is
easy to spend the day chatting with
fellow trekkers, watching shaggy
yaks amble their way in and around
Gokyo (sometimes casually sticking
their heads inside the lodges) and
admiring the views. For those with
energy left over after the pass, a
must is an excursion up Gokyo Ri
(5360m) for some Everest spotting
and all-around spectacular views of
the lakes, the glacial moraine, the
Khumbu icefall and the Himalayan
peaks surrounding us on all sides
(including Makalu, this time). It is
fantastic in the morning, the middle
of the day or for sunset, but don't
forget to bring a torch if you opt
for a 'sunset on Everest' views,
which is better than the sunrise. |
Day 09: |
Trek Gokyo - Gokyo Ri Gokyo
We can rest today or those feeling
energetic can attempt to climb Gokyo
peak (5360m.) for a panoramic view
of some of the worlds highest
mountains Everest. |
Day 10:
|
Trek Gokyo - Chola
Trek towards the lakes to Gokyo
following a very scenic path to
Pangka . The trail decends slightly
and follows a melt water river which
flows down the west side of the
Ngozumpa Glacier. The trail climbs
steeply after Machhermo, ascending a
spur that it rounds, and thnen
carries on along the slope, more or
less level, to reach Pangka. Superb
views of Cho Oyu greet you as you
ascend. Gokyo (4750M) has
osatounding views, everest in the
east standing tall. Taboche and
Cholatse tower to the south-east and
Cho Oyo directly to North. After
crosing steep rocky path you reach
the the valley by the side of the
glacier where you pass pass the
first of the holy lakes and soon
arrive at the second of the lakes.
The third lake is known as Dudh
Pokhari and on its eastern shore is
the settlement of Gokyo. While
walking by the side of the lake, the
scenery is magnificent with the
summits of Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang
reflected in its emerald green
waters. |
Day 11: |
Trek Chola Dzongla
The trail descends from Goykyo,
passing the second lake. About
halfway between the first and second
lakes a trail leads across the
moraine to the east and the Cho-La
pass (Chhugyuma) at 5,420m. The pass
is not difficult but it is steep and
involves a glacier traverse on the
eastern side. It takes 3 days from
Gokyo to Lobuche on this high
altitude route. |
Day 12: |
Trek Dzongla Lobuche
Continue along the moraine of the
glacier, with views of Kalapathar
and Pumori, before reaching Lobuche
at (4910m) for your evening stay.
This is the last stop before the
climb to the base camp the next day.
It is simportant to take the time to
rest and acclimatize for this
unforgettable day |
Day 13: |
Trek Lobuche - Gorakshep

way you begin to follow steep ascent
path to reach Lobuche Base Camp. The

Thamserku, Kantega and many more.
|
Day 16: |
Summit Lobuche and trek back
Pheriche
Today is our main adventure day, we
start early in the morning to climb
Lobuche peak but it all depends on
the weather condition. it takes
about ten hours. At the summit you
will catch panoramic views of
Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam,
Tawache, Cholatse, Pumori, Changri
and more. After a safe trip to the
top we safely make our way down then
same day back to Pheriche. |
Day 17: |
Trek Pheriche - Pangboche -
Thyangpoche.
We will trek down through the
hillside blanketed by rhododendron
and juniper trees. If it's spring,
pink and red rhododendron flowers
ablaze our surroundings. Depending
on our hunger and condition, we
either have our lunch in Pangboche
or wait until we reach Phunki Tenga
for lunch. After crossing the prayer
flag festooned bridge over the Dudh
Koshi River trail then follows the
Dudh Koshi gorge descending rapidly
through the pine forests. The path
eventually reaches Sansa which is
the major trail junction in the
region. We stop at Kyangjuma (3570
