center for hunting trips for British
and Nepalese aristocrats. During the
nineteen-fifties, the use of DDT
virtually eradicated malaria, and
people from the hills flocked to the
valley to transform it into
farmland. Disappearing habitat led
to a decline in animal populations,
which was halted in 1964 when a
sanctuary was established and 22,000
people were relocated. The National
Park was declared in 1973, and
animal numbers have grown to the
extent that it now offers one of the
finest wildlife experiences in Asia.
It contains about 400 rhino and 80
tigers, plus 50 other species of
mammals and over 400 species of
birds.
